Case Study: Compliance Assessment and Consultation

HazMat Safety Consulting (HSC) conducted a compliance assessment for a company that ships lithium batteries. The company did not have extensive experience in complying with domestic and international dangerous goods regulations. While one person in their shipping department had taken an online battery shipping course, the company management was concerned that they may need some compliance assistance. They engaged HSC to conduct an onsite compliance assessment.

HSC met with management and other staff involved in manufacturing, purchasing, shipping, storage, and handling exchanged information and answered questions. HSC then conducted a thorough evaluation of the operations. A compliance gap analysis was provided within one week of the visit making various recommendations from addressing serious compliance issues to implementing industry best practices to make operations more efficient and reduce unnecessary costs. HSC worked with the client to implement the recommendations, develop standard operation procedures, provide customized employee training all on a priority basis.

One month after the initial compliance assessment the client was visited by a DOT enforcement inspector. The inspector was so impressed with the company’s compliance program that they only spent a minimal amount of time conducting the investigation and left the facility finding no violations.
